Corbans Estate Ghetto Shoot
We had planned this for weeks. A hip-hop ghetto shoot. At least 50 facebook event wall posts and messages, arranging for models with the right look. Changing times from afternoon to morning to suit people's schedules, nights of trawling through flickr and google images for ideas, gathering props etc etc. Then it finally gelled together on a wet rainy morning. Photographers from different studios turned up. It was an epic collaboration and a great learning experience. Thanks to the staff of Corbans Estate Arts Centre for gracefully allowing us to shoot on their grounds.

Check out the other photographers' work:

Electronic Visitor Assistance
EVA - Electronic Visitor Assistance.

Tasked with taking product photos of a shiny stand and a glossy touchscreen, this shoot proved to be challenging beyond expectations.

Challenges:
1. Low light
2. Specular reflections on the shiny stand and glossy screen created by ceiling lights.
3. The diffuser and softbox kept showing up in the images due to the glossy texture of the stand and screen.

Sunrise at Alishan Mountains in Taiwan. The Alishan National Scenic Area (Chinese: ????????) is a mountain resort and nature reserve located in the mountains of Chiayi County in Taiwan. It is 415 kmē in area. Taken with a naked Canon 60D at f/22, 1/8000sec, ISO-100, Exposure bias -5. The intensity of the sun made this impossible to photograph through the viewfinder. This photograph involved quick decision-making and a bit of luck. It all happened within 1 minute after 30 minutes of waiting, and getting up at 5am to ascend to the summit (via train).

Today, I thought I'd share some of my tips for taking a good photograph. They are not rules, just pointers I take on myself.

1. Adopt a firm foot stance. This allows you to focus on composing the image rather than trying to steady yourself.
2. Hold the camera close to your body. This applies to any camera. This gives you a firmer grip, less shake, and also allows you to focus on taking the photo.
3. Breathe out when pressing the shutter. This prevents camera shake. At least it works for me!
4. Bob and weave around your initial standpoint. You might find a better perspective!
5. Shoot from the shade. The subjects could be out in the sun but shoot in the shade to prevent lens flare.
6. When shooting with people, get your subjects to loosen up by asking them to give each other a hug, tell them to wave at you, ask about their day, etc.
7. When you take a nice shot of someone, show it to them. This gives them confidence about the photographer, and the interaction certainly helps keeping them nice and relaxed.
8. Place your subjects slightly off centre. This breaks symmetry and adds interest.
9. Keep a scrap book of pictures that inspire you. These could be from magazines, newspapers, blogs, Facebook etc.
10. Have fun and enjoy yourself!
